Havana, Jan 19.- Until 2022, the Varadero Half Marathon will have to wait to celebrate its third edition after the organizers confirmed the suspension of the event, which was scheduled for March 28.
The decision responds to the still unstable epidemiological situation in the world and in Cuba due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a contagious virus that has forced most sports events to change since the beginning of 2020.
We had planned an event with all the required protocols and the necessary adjustments to avoid infections, but not even that is a guarantee at this time, assured the president of the Cuban Athletics Federation (FCA) Alberto Juantorena.
Suspending it and preparing conditions for a successful celebration in 2022 is the best, said the two-time Montreal 1976 Olympic champion, leader of a project that involves other glories of Cuban sport and the international Tour Operator Pineda Sports.
Organized for the first time in 2018, the race then brought together half a thousand participants and a year later doubled the number, in addition to always having the presence of African runners.
The news announced for this 2021 will be postponed a year and that is why it will be in 2022 when the marathon race (42 kilometers and 195 meters) will be released, in addition to the skating competition that was planned.
The race will be maintained at 10 kilometers and the popular one at three thousand meters, which is very attractive to the population. (Text and photo: JIT)
