Individual responsibility is the ultimate savior

By Dania Díaz Socarrás / Radio Cadena Agramonte.

A few months ago we applauded our doctors every night; many of us still do, because their role in this pandemic is still just as great. However, various attitudes do not correspond to the support deserved by those heroes whom we have praised so much and who are still not at home for weeks, devoted to saving, without seeing their children every day.

A few months ago we spoke of solidarity, of gratitude; Today we are forced to distribute the blame in the face of the desperation of figures that are close to a thousand infected with Covid-19 in the country and that in Camagüey do not fall than a hundred admitted with the active virus at every dawn.

Children, who previously felt somewhat sheltered, are now much more affected, and deaths are also adding numbers and deducting lives; lives of people like us, who leave behind families, whatever their age.

However, for those who are saved, recent studies speak of the first effects on the human body of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and among them are severe and irreparable damage to the respiratory system, even in asymptomatic patients.

Although it could be believed that he escaped unharmed, X-ray examinations around the world show the similarity of the lungs of everyone who has suffered from Covid-19 with those of those who smoked their entire life.

Therefore, the recommendation continues to be to avoid contagion, an alternative only possible with the appropriate dose of individual and collective responsibility.

I don't know about you, but I think that the applause unit, the one that proved that we are together for the same reason, has to materialize all the time until we win this battle.

So why is it now as if some, who seem more and more, fail to feel involved? Because they think that it is not going to touch them, that they do not need to protect themselves, that their young children will not be infected if they are exposed to the virus? I see it: every day there are more who do not assimilate the simple rules of using the face mask correctly or staying at a safe distance for their own good and that of all.

In the absence of responsibility and discipline, protocols related to travelers were rectified, seeking to reduce transmission, and dissimilar measures are applied in each territory.

But nothing will be achieved if the trips continue without compelling reasons, with paid insulation expenses upon return, or if at home and on the streets not everyone does their bit.

Do not be the culprit of other months like last January or this February, of negative records of infections, deaths and children in danger. Do not put on your shoulders the weight of a workplace, a neighborhood or a school at risk.

Vaccines, treatments may arrive, the most encouraging prognoses may come true, but by then, the first thing is to make sure we are alive and have a complete family; only then will that victory be worth celebrating. (Photo: Alejandro Rodríguez)
