Havana, February 22.- The 60th National Bivalent Oral Polio Vaccination Campaign will begin today in Cuba, the Ministry of Public Health reported.
This immunization plan will be materialized until next day 27 and a second stage will take place from March 1 to 9.
Children under three years of age will receive the vaccine and there will be a second dose for those of nine, to be carried out in polyclinics and the family doctor's and nurse's offices.
Before 1959, only two diseases were eradicated in the country, yellow fever and smallpox, but in the revolutionary stage, six are already eliminated with immunization plans.
Polio vaccination campaigns began in Cuba in 1962 and since then they have been carried out every year to protect the population.
Cuba was the first country in Latin America to be declared a territory free of this infectious-contagious disease that affects the central nervous system.
The ailment can cause swelling of the brain and spinal cord motor neurons, leading to muscle atrophy, paralysis, deformity and even death, and children are the main affected. (Text and photo: PL)
