VIII Party Congress delegates will be elected on May 4th

Havana, Mar 2 - The XI Plenary of the Party Central Committee in December 2019 agreed that the Eighth Congress would be held from April 16 to 19, 2021. During 2020, amidst other important tasks associated with the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, the steps prior to its celebration were taken. On December 2, 2020, the Call for the event was made public, which includes the topics that will be addressed.

On February 9 of this year, the Political Bureau analyzed and ratified that the Congress would be held on the scheduled date. Since the end of 2020, a broad and democratic process of electing pre-candidates to delegates to Congress had been developed in primary organizations, from which thousands of valuable fellow nominees emerged.

Next Thursday, March 4, strictly complying with the sanitary protocols, plenary sessions of the Provincial Committees of the Party will be held, in which the delegation of each province to the Eighth Congress will be elected.

Once elected, the delegates will receive the documents that will be debated at the event. In each province they will carry out study, exchange, clarification and analysis sessions between March 15 and 20, also strictly complying with physical distancing and other hygienic-sanitary measures. All opinions derived from these meetings will be collected and evaluated by the working committees of the Congress.

It is appropriate to recall that prior to the Sixth Congress, a broad partisan and popular debate took place, from which the Guidelines for the Economic and Social Policy of the Party and the Revolution were derived, which were later updated and work continues on their implementation.

After the Seventh Congress, the Conceptualization of the socialist development model and the Bases of the plan until 2030 were subjected to analysis and improvement of the Party and UJC membership, as well as broad sectors of the population.

In turn, in 2018 a momentous debate was held throughout the country on what the new Constitution would be like, which was approved by an overwhelming majority in 2019 and ratified the socialist course set and agreed upon.

In the coming days, the Granma newspaper will publish articles with information of interest on the issues that will be discussed at the party event. (ACN)(Photo: Granma)
