Havana, Mar 4.- The perpetrators of the derailment of the train that covered the Mariel-Habana-Cárdenas route in May 2019 were punished for crimes of sabotage and other acts against State security, the local press published today.
According to the Granma newspaper, the defendants Miguel Ángel Rodríguez Batista, Yoandris Ortiz Meriño, Raidel Sánchez Mayedo, JoaquínCamejo Corrales and LázaroYerson Ramos Salín received sanctions for their connection with this event.
A press release from the Chamber of Crimes against State Security of the People's Provincial Court of Havana indicates that the accused Rodríguez Batista contacted Luis Mario Vela Reyes through Yasser Izquierdo Hernández, both Cubans residing in the United States.
Vela Reyes promised him the sum of a thousand dollars to derail one of the trains that circulate on the railroad that connects the Mariel, Artemisa province, with the capital of the country, he adds.
Rodríguez Batista had to deliver the recording of his actions and reported his claims to the remaining defendants to add them to the sabotage, except Yoandris Ortiz Meriño, who, however, did not report such a serious event to the corresponding authorities.
On May 25, 2019, after ten o'clock at night, the five involved showed up at kilometer 14,750 of the railway line for the event.
While Ortiz Meriño watched from a nearby place, the rest detached one of the rails, causing freight train 1223, with locomotive 312031, to derail.
The action caused damage to the railroad and damages for an amount of 400 thousand pesos in national currency (equivalent to 16 thousand dollars).
The judges of the case issued sentences of between 17 and 24 years of imprisonment for those accused of sabotage, while Ortiz Meriñowas sentenced with three years of imprisonment. (Text and photo: PL)
