Cuba denounces at the UN attack on telecommunications from the US

United Nations, Apr 27.- Cuba denounced at the UN the permanent aggressiveness promoted by the United States in the areas of telecommunications and Internet connectivity, topics that will be discussed today by a high-level event of the General Assembly.

For several years, the island has faced radio and television attacks that contravene the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and provisions of the International Telecommunications Union, which are now increasing amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is how the permanent representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Pedro Luis Pedroso, denounced the day before, who also rejected Washington's claim to flagrantly violate the sovereignty of his country with regard to the regulation of information flows and use of the mass media.

In his speech at the 43rd Information Committee, the ambassador offered details of the damage caused by the US blockade against the Caribbean nation: from April 2019 to March 2020, record losses of more than five billion dollars were recorded.

Despite the obstacles, he observed, Cuba is making progress in the process of computerizing its society and in accessing the Internet, thanks to the will of the Government.

But in the last four years, the aggressiveness of US policy against the Cuban people and against sovereign states that seek economic and commercial relations with the island has progressively and systematically increased.

Such is the case, added the ambassador, of the implementation of Title III of the Helms Burton Act, which has a negative impact on development programs in this area.

The more than 240 measures applied against Cuba during the Donald Trump administration, 50 of them adopted in 2020 in the midst of the pandemic, illustrate the particular cruelty against the island's people and government, he emphasized.

Pedroso rejected the decision of the US State Department, in January 2018, to convene an Internet Working Group for Cuba, which aims to turn social networks into channels of subversion, focused on the creation of wireless networks out of control state and in carrying out cyber attacks.

From the United States, financial support for the development of platforms for the generation of ideological content is growing and they openly call for subverting the Cuban constitutional order, he denounced.

Likewise, Pedroso stressed, calls are launched for demonstrations in public spaces and sabotage and terrorist acts are incited, including the murder of law enforcement officials and government representatives.

This Tuesday, the UN General Assembly will host a high-level thematic debate on digital cooperation and connectivity, with an emphasis on the challenges arising from the pandemic. (Text and photo: PL)
