Havana, May 7 - The damage caused to Cuba by the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States reached record figures last year and currently continues causing damage.
According to the report prepared by the Caribbean nation, the losses between April 2019 and March 2020 exceeded five billion dollars for the first time (five thousand 570.3 million USD), even without accounting for the damages caused during the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the aggressions of the Donald Trump administration, instead of diminishing in the midst of the international health emergency, were re-impelled with new measures, until reaching more than 240 provisions that remain in force at the end of his term.
The institutions of the Antillean country now calculate the numbers corresponding to the period between April 1 and December 31, 2020, but the increased suffering of citizens is impossible to translate into figures.
The global economic paralysis and the shortage of products was multiplied on the island by the effects of the economic siege, and only in the health sector, where the entire planet directed its efforts, hindered the acquisition of essential medicines, supplies and equipment.
According to the Cuban Ministry of Public Health, in just nine months of 2020 the effects of the blockade exceeded those received the previous year by more than 38 million dollars.
That is, if between April 2019 and March 2020 that policy caused losses in the order of 160 million 260 thousand 880 dollars; from April 1 to December 31, 2020, it reached 198 million 348 thousand dollars.
These numbers include the problems faced by donations of masks and diagnostic kits to reach Cuban territory, as happened to the founder of Alibaba Group, Jack Ma, to whom the contracted American transport company declined the order at the last minute.
It also includes the impossibility of buying lung ventilators from the North American company Vyaire Medical INC., Or the refusal of several banks to transfer donations made by the solidarity organizations MediCuba -Switzerland and the Asociación Suiza-Cuba, for the purchase of reagents and protection supplies.
Other examples could be added, such as the refusal of the airline Avianca to accept goods with final destination in Cuba, or the silence of about 70 US companies in the face of the request to acquire medicines, equipment and other necessary materials.
Health is not, however, the only sector affected, despite the contraction suffered by all, each one registers its own balance within the damages that the blockade causes; construction, for example, totaled more than $ 18 million between April and December 2020.
Nobody with a sense of honesty and with economic data that are in the public domain can ignore that this fence constitutes the main obstacle to the development of our country, he said at the closing of the 8th Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba, its first secretary Miguel Díaz-Canel.
He added that this truth does not try to hide the inadequacies of the economic performance of the Caribbean nation, but no one can remove the blockade or a blame for the main problems it has to advance in the search for prosperity and well-being, he insisted.
He commented that to do so would be to deny the almost absolute dominance that the United States has over global markets and finance, and its determining influence on the policies of other governments.
Despite this, the world shows sign of supporting Cuba's claim to end six decades of economic asphyxia on its people, as evidenced by the international caravans and mobilizations; in addition to 28 votes within the United Nations.
It is also reflected in the voices that from American society demand the lifting of all unilateral measures and the normalization of relations with the island, including a large group of congressmen. Will there be receptive ears in the White House? (Text and photo: PL)
