Anti-COVID-19 vaccination begins next Wednesday in Havana

Havana, May 10 - Authorities, scientists and Cuban Health personnel finalize today the details for the health intervention in risk groups, with the anti-COVID-19 vaccine candidate Abdala, which will begin next Wednesday in Havana.

The Business Group of the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries (BioCubaFarma) assured on its Twitter account that the doses of Abdala are already available for administration in the volunteers of the municipalities of San Miguel del Padrón, Habana del Este, Guanabacoa and Regla, where it will begin the intervention on Wednesday, May 12.

As recently explained by the Minister of Public Health, José Angel Portal, a total of 396,382 inhabitants of these territories will receive the doses during the first half of May until June.

Then they will be followed by Boyeros, Cotorro and Arroyo Naranjo, with 382 thousand 16 volunteers, a process that will take place between the last week of May until July.

Between the months of May and June, the vaccine candidate will also receive 474 thousand 676 health workers and students from all over the country who were not considered in the study and intervention processes already carried out or in progress.

Also between May and August a part of the population of Santiago de Cuba, Matanzas, Pinar del Río and the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud will be vaccinated, with the candidates Abdala or Soberana 02, both in phase III of clinical trials.

Dr. Portal explained that the health intervention is temporary until the Center for State Control of Medicines, Equipment and Medical Devices (Cedmed), the regulatory authority in Cuba, can issue the authorization for the massive use of these proposals.

He pointed out that this decision was made to advance the immunization of the population based on the good results of these candidates in their different stages of studies.

These are actions that are carried out taking into account the epidemiological evidence and the available technology (in this case, the vaccine candidates ) for the eradication, elimination, reduction of exposure levels, control of natural transmission or prevention of the occurrence of epidemics, limitation damage and / or reduction of mortality, detailed the health authority.

He explained that the estimate for the authorization of Cedmed for the emergency use of these vaccines could be taken in June, and by August it is expected to have immunized 70 percent of the Cuban population. (PL) (Photo: File)
