Human Rights in Cuba: A commitment to dignity and inclusion

Every December 10th, the world celebrates Human Rights Day. And many countries once again ask themselves how many rights have been won for the true happiness of their people, and how many are still being crushed by wars, lies, manipulation, rhetoric, and even laws that contradict the Universal Declaration, proclaimed in 1948 by the United Nations General Assembly.

Among the dozens of rights contained in that document—to life, education, health, justice, housing, food, culture, social security, among many others—it is pertinent to focus on the right to work and rights in work, which is not just a play on words, and Cuba can demonstrate this with facts.

The first involves having access to employment and a salary without any discrimination, allowing for economic and material security. Laws promoted since the revolutionary triumph itself, unemployment rates below international levels, wage reforms in line with the social context, and most recently, the discussion of a draft modern and inclusive Labor Code, attest to this.

Of course, once the position is obtained, rights do not fall behind, as training, vacations, safety and hygiene conditions, a reasonable number of working hours, as well as remaining in or advancing in the position according to ability and contributions, are all accounted for.

The right to join a union that defends their interests and represents them before employers and the government is no small matter. In our case, this right is expressed through 15 national unions, all part of the Cuban Workers Union (CTC, for its acronym in Spanish), founded as far back as 1939.

Nothing is perfect in any of our achievements. Much remains to be accomplished, but there is respect and integrity, guarantees and rights. And there is also fidelity to a Martí-inspired ideal: “Work gives wings.” (Trabajadores Digital) (Photo: Taken from the Internet)
