Havana, Jan 23.- The Carlos J. Finlay Order was awarded today to 35 outstanding researchers in recognition of their merits and valuable contributions to the development of natural or social sciences in Cuba and for the benefit of humanity.
The Center for Research and Development of Armaments and Infantry, of the Ministry of the Armed Forces, located in the province of Camagüey and dedicated to the development, obtaining, modernization and evaluation of devices and weapons.
Among the contributions of the recipients, the preservation and improvement of the health and well-being of the people stands out, especially the development of a peptide with powerful activity against the dengue virus, which is currently undergoing pre-clinical evaluation.
Also relevant is the obtaining of new generation molecules with innovative potential and biosimilar antibodies for the treatment of cancer.
Additionally, those linked to the fields of environmental education, economic-environmental valuation of ecosystem goods and services, financing of biodiversity and renewable energies stand out.
Other notable contributions refer to the management of cultural heritage, documentary conservation and digital transformation, the use of nuclear techniques in environmental studies and theoretical contributions about the scientific foundations of Cuban preschool education, as well as the definition of early childhood infant.
On behalf of the recipients, Heydi Méndez, from the Center for Applications of Advanced Technologies, highlighted that in the same way that trees grow, so does Science grow in Cuba in all sectors of development, to demonstrate that better is possible.
All with the vision of the leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro that “only the path of work, technology and science is what makes humanity progress,” she highlighted.
In his closing remarks, the First Vice Minister of Science, Technology and Environment, José Fidel Santana, highlighted that today more than ever, when the world faces multiple crises, it is threatened by climate change, war conflicts and hunger and poverty are increasing.
