USA, Dec 4. - PlayStation, the video game console manufactured and distributed by the Japanese company Sony, celebrated its 30th anniversary since being launched on the market on December 3.
Since the Play, as it is known by video game lovers, arrived in the homes of children and adults, it has become one of the favorite consoles of gamers, to such an extent that its second version — the PS2 — is the best-selling in history, with 160 million units, according to figures from the Japanese company.
Sony's games division, which includes the PlayStation, a gift desired by gamers at Christmas, Three Kings Day or a birthday, is currently the Japanese company's first source of income and represents a third of the totals reported by the Japanese technology firm.
Recently, Sony announced that between July and September of this year its profits had grown by 73 percent compared to the previous year, due to a strong increase in sales in its games business.
The quarterly report indicates that Sony generates more than a third of its revenue from the games and network services segment, where profits almost tripled to 138.8 billion yen during the third quarter of the year, or the equivalent of about 929 million 578 thousand dollars.
Sony says on its website that the first version of the PlayStation sold 120 million units between 1994 and 2006. It was launched in Japan on December 3, 1994, and in Latin America market on September 9, 1995.
With its version of the PlayStation 2, Sony has sold 160 million consoles since 2000, making it the best-selling console in the world above Nintendo or Xbox, and that it also represented one of the most revolutionary video games in the industry.
On December 11, 2004, Sony launched the PlayStation Portable, one of the most innovative consoles and the first one that the Japanese company launched so that video game lovers could play at all times, at the same time that it was the first one that had a system to connect to the Internet (Wi-Fi).
In November 2006, the Japanese technology firm made the PlayStation 3 available to gamers, which has sold 87 million units worldwide and innovated with wireless controls, while in December 2011 it launched the PlayStation Vita, an improved version of the PSP.
In February 2014, 19 years after the first version of the Play, Sony launched the PlayStation 4, a console that increased connectivity for online gaming around the world, which included new graphics and which has sold 117 million units since its launch.
On November 12, 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, the Japanese firm surprised the world with the PlayStation 5, thus marking the beginning of the so-called new generation of consoles, which to this day is the one that predominates in the market.
