A NASA radar has accidentally discovered a hidden structure under the ice in the Arctic. It is Camp Century, a US military base built during the Cold War, which was buried by layers of ice and snow in Greenland.
The recently revealed images were captured in April of this year, when a team of engineers and scientists flew over the territory of Greenland to test the effectiveness of the UAVSAR radar. Unlike other radars that only generate 2D images, the UAVSAR produces a mapping with more dimensionality, which allowed the identification of this forgotten relic, also known as "the city under the ice."
"In the new data, individual structures of the secret city are visible in a way that has never been achieved before," explained Chad Greene, a NASA researcher.
Camp Century was built in 1959 by the US Army Corps of Engineers, excavating a network of tunnels within the ice sheet close to the surface. In 1967 it was abandoned, and since then snow and ice have accumulated there, causing the structure to be at least 30 meters below ground. (Text and photo: RT)
