Cuban agri-food industry strengthen with support from European Union and French Cooperation

Havana, Apr 15th. - The main objective of the cooperation of the project is to facilitate financing for the realization of livestock and agricultural operations - in the upper area of Camagüey, of an investigation cut, that allow to increase productions.

This was stated by Jean Marc Liger, director of the French Agency for Development in Cuba and coordinator of the project, who said that, in the same way, within the main objectives is cooperation with the Bank of Credit and Commerce (Bandec) to offer credits a priori, large companies with foreign exchange income.

This transcended during the second Strategic Committee of the Project Contribution to the sustainable development of the agri-food sector, moving towards a greener future in the Central-East region of Cuba (AGROVERDE-LAIF) recently held in Havana.

Marc Liger explained that, the first purpose of the project is to think about agriculture of the future, which respects natural resources, which has a sustainability dimension, taking into account climate change, thinking about producing energy and reducing and rationalizing fertilizers and inputs.

For her part, Amaya Olivares Zapian, coordinator of the delegation of the European Union (EU) stated that it is essential to think of agriculture in a sustainable way, in order to ensure safe food.

Taking into account the challenges facing the country, on financing issues, the EU wants to facilitate such access to the funds necessary to ensure development within the agri-food sector in this case, Olivares Zapian added.

The director of AFD on the island detailed that, since 2023, when the articulation began in Cuba, the sample was 23 companies, with a goal of 50, but in this 2025 they already have more significant results in research areas.

We understand that working in a coordinated manner can facilitate the achievement of the objectives set. These are several lines of work that includes research projects, financing for equipment and for credits necessary to start with this goal of creating a Green Fund in Cuba, said Rolando Castro, representative for the Cuban side.
