The Federation of Cuban Women (FMC, for its acronym in Spanish) in Camagüey and the people of Camagüey remember and pay permanent tribute to Celia Sánchez Manduley, one of the most native and emblematic figures of the Cuban Revolution.
Celia, who was born on May 9, 1920 and died on January 11, 1980, was a woman who cared for and enriched the history and legacy of Fidel Castro with her devotion and dedication, from the days in the Sierra Maestra. Her commitment and sacrifice made her a symbol of the revolutionary struggle and the defense of the homeland.
From her first steps in the struggle she stood out for her active participation in the 26 de Julio Movement. She was the one who organized the clandestine network of peasants that was fundamental to the guerrilla's survival during its campaign in the East. Her work was crucial in preparing for the landing of the Granma and in the consolidation of the Rebel Army, which later overthrew the Batista dictatorship.
Throughout her life, she undertook several missions related to supplying and supporting the guerrillas in the Sierra. In addition, she became a direct combatant, participating in armed struggle confrontations. She was the first woman to join the ranks of the Rebel Army as a soldier, demonstrating her courage and commitment.
After the triumph of January 1, 1959, Celia continued serving the Revolution in several important positions. She served as secretary of the Council of State, deputy to Parliament, and a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba. She was also one of the key leaders in the National Directorate of the FMC, always committed to the equality and well-being of Cubans.
Today, in every corner of Camagüey and in the hearts of the people of Camagüey, the figure of Celia Sánchez Manduley remains alive as an example of dedication, courage and love for Cuba. The memory of her struggle and her legacy continue to inspire new generations, reaffirming the commitment to continue building a more just and sovereign nation in honor of that woman who dedicated her life to the revolution and her people.
