Eighty years of the United Nations between wars and crises

United Nations, September 22 – In an international context of proliferating wars and crises, the UN is holding today the High-Level Meeting to mark the commemoration of its eight decades of existence.

Starting at 9:00 a.m. local time (Eastern), the meeting will begin at the organization's headquarters, where UN officials and Heads of State and Government who traveled to New York will reflect on achievements and the path forward to achieve a more inclusive and responsive multilateral system.

The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly is taking place under the motto "Better Together: 80 Years and Beyond for Peace, Development and Human Rights," at a crucial moment to renew the global commitment to multilateralism, solidarity, and shared action for people and the planet.

This year's high-level week highlights the urgency of fulfilling the promise of the Sustainable Development Goals and revitalizing global cooperation, the organization notes.

According to the program, the debates will begin tomorrow, September 23, and continue until next Monday, September 29.

The UN website noted that Gaza and the Palestinian State, Ukraine, Sudan, and other wars, along with climate change, women's equality, and artificial intelligence, are among the topics of greatest interest for the General Assembly's big week, with at least 193 speakers scheduled to speak.

Other meetings planned include the Summit for a Sustainable, Inclusive, and Resilient Global Economy (September 24), while three more will be held on the 25th, including the Summit on the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases and the Promotion of Mental Health, and the Commemoration of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

This session will feature a woman as the new president of the General Assembly. Annalena Baerbock is the fifth woman to hold the position in the UN's 80-year history.

One of the controversies is the Donald Trump administration's decision to cancel visas for members of the Palestinian delegation, including its main representative, President Mahmoud Abbas.

The United Nations (UN) was officially founded on October 24, 1945. (Text and photo: PL)
