Brasilia, September 23. - Brazil's Prosecutor General today accused Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro and blogger Paulo Figueiredo of alleged coercion in judicial proceedings related to the attempted coup, accusing them of acting to favor personal and family interests.
Attorney General Paulo Gonet filed the formal accusation before the Supreme Federal Court (STF) against the legislator, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, and Figueiredo, grandson of the last leader of the military dictatorship (1964-1985).
This charge is based on Article 344 of the Penal Code, which defines the crime of coercion during a legal proceeding.
According to the Public Ministry, the accused ones resorted to pressure and threats—some even linked to sanctions from foreign governments—with the aim of favoring their own interests and protecting former president Bolsonaro (2019-2022).
The two repeatedly acted to the detriment of the Republic, subordinating it to personal and family goals, states the document presented by Gonet.
Currently residing in the United States, those involved reacted with a statement published on the social media platform X and asserted their constitutional right to ask Washington to review alleged judicial abuses committed in Brazil.
The First Amendment protects us, and we will continue to exercise that right," they argued. They also accused Brazilian authorities of engaging in "transnational repression against citizens who, although with Brazilian nationality, act under US jurisdiction."
The accusation comes at a sensitive time: just five days after the Chamber of Deputies approved the urgent processing of a controversial amnesty law for those convicted of violent acts on January 8, 2023.
If applied broadly, the law could benefit former President Bolsonaro, sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for his role in the attempted coup.
This is not the first time that Eduardo Bolsonaro has been targeted by the Supreme Court. In May, Judge Alexandre de Moraes opened an investigation against him for activities carried out in the United States, considered attempts to obstruct justice and attacks on national sovereignty.
In their most recent defense, both the parliamentarian and the content creator pointed out that Gonet's accusations reinforce their position in favor of a broad, general, and unrestricted amnesty.
According to the accused ones, any alternative will only aggravate the political crisis and deepen the confrontation with the United States.
The complaint adds a new chapter to the complex political and judicial scenario surrounding Bolsonarism (Bolsonaro supporters), which is playing out part of its immediate future between the Brazilian courts, international alliances, and the parliamentary debate on the amnesty.
