Hanoi, September 24 – The campaign to support Cuba launched by the Vietnam Red Cross is progressing well, with contributions received from more than 2,055,000 citizens and entities to date.
Almost a month and a half after its launch, the total amount raised has surpassed 431,612 million dong (more than 16,341,000 dollars, according to the daily exchange rate), a figure six times the initial goal.
“Each number is a sign of love sent to a distant friend,” the Vietnamese Red Cross wrote on its Facebook page, emphasizing that every contribution, no matter how small, is seen as a noble and beautiful gesture expressing warm affection and giving strength to the Cuban people, a traditional friend of the Indochina nation.
Among the most recent news about the campaign spread on social media is the participation of Quang Tri Province, which as of 5:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday had raised more than 13.724 billion VND (approximately $520,000), the highest amount received through local channels in the country.
The campaign was launched on August 13 to mark the 99th birthday of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro and in the context of the Year of Vietnam-Cuba Friendship and the 65th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations.
The initial goal of this solidarity action was to raise 65 billion dong (around two million 400 thousand dollars), but this was reached in just 30 hours.
According to the acting president of the Vietnam Red Cross, Nguyen Hai Anh, this is the first time an international campaign promoted by that entity has reached such magnitude in terms of funds raised and number of participants in such a short period.
At the launch ceremony, Politburo member of the Communist Party (CPV) and president of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, Do Van Chien, stressed that this action demonstrates the humanitarian tradition of the Vietnamese people and the deep friendship between both nations.
The program not only aims to provide material support to overcome the immediate difficulties Cuba is facing but also to powerfully spread a message of empathy and international solidarity, Van Chien said, reiterating that under any circumstances, the Vietnamese people are always alongside the Cuban people.
This, he emphasized, is a traditional connection of affection that spans 65 years, in which brotherly love has overcome all geographical distances and economic conditions to become an enduring spiritual value. (Text and photo: PL)
