United Nations, Nov. 10 - At least 117 million people worldwide were victims of forced displacement due to war, violence, persecution, and the climate crisis, the United Nations (UN) warned today.
According to a report by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), these phenomena are pushing already vulnerable communities to the brink and demand immediate action from international actors.
Over the past decade, climate-related disasters have caused 250 million internal displacements, the equivalent of approximately 70,000 per day or two every three seconds, the agency noted.
"Extreme weather conditions put people's safety at greater risk; they disrupt access to essential services, destroy homes and livelihoods, and force families - many of whom have already escaped violence - to flee again," stated High Commissioner Filippo Grandi.
He indicated that these are human beings who have already suffered immense losses and must also face the effects of drought, floods, and heatwaves without the resources to recover.
Evidence indicates that by 2050, the hottest refugee camps could experience nearly 200 days
of extreme heat stress per year, with serious risks to health and survival, UNHCR warned.
"It is likely that many of these places will become uninhabitable due to the lethal combination of extreme heat and high humidity," it added. (Source: Prensa Latina)
