Pinar del Río, Aug 28.- Division General Ramón Pardo Guerra, chief of the National Civil Defense Staff, toured the coastal town of La Coloma, in the municipality of Pinar del Río, on Monday to verify first-hand the preparation facing tropical storm Idalia.
It is expected that this organism will cause intense rains to the westernmost territory of Cuba, hence the protection of lives is a prerequisite, especially taking into account the experience of Hurricane Ian, 11 months ago, which caused unprecedented penetration of the sea in that community, of more than seven thousand inhabitants.
For this reason, some 450 people were evacuated at that site in the homes of relatives and friends, and 70 in one of the two evacuation centers set up in the main municipality.
Accompanied by Yamilé Ramos Cordero, president of the Provincial Defense Council, Pardo Guerra visited the La Coloma Industrial Fishing Company (EPICOL) where he was interested in the measures implemented to avoid affecting vessels, workers and industry.
He spoke with locals and insisted on the need not to trust in the face of the tropical storm, to comply with the guidelines of the Civil Defense and to be disciplined.
In the extended emergency service, he exchanged with the members of the surgical medical brigade of the Abel Santamaría Cuadrado provincial hospital, which has been there since Saturday to attend to contingency situations.
This is the case of Dr. Javier Jesús González, a specialist in Surgery, who for the third time is part of a group of this type in response to hydrometeorological events.
All medical resources are guaranteed by the institution and it is a privilege to be useful in these contingencies, he assured the press.
Yudalis Rodríguez Castro, president of the Municipal Defense Council of Pinar del Río, specified that in EPICOL two special brigades are ready, with boats, so that in case of isolation of the highway and in case of an emergency, have a link with the forces of Rescue and Salvage that operate from the main city.
He stressed that the population has been cooperative and the constituency delegates in front of the voters have supported the implementation of measures aimed at avoiding loss of human life and protecting the resources of the economy.
Pardo Guerra visited the La Coloma Pizzeria Base Business Unit, where its workers currently prepare food to sell to the population.
In addition, he went to one of the two evacuation centers in the municipality of Pinar del Río and was interested in the conditions for the stay, food and medical service.
