Beijing, May 12th. - The foreign ministers of Cuba, Bruno Rodriguez, and China, Wang Yi, today underlined the excellent bilateral ties, as well as the relevance of the Beijing-Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) ties in a complex international context.
Rodriguez said it is a duty to promote the best relations between China and LAC, aware that in the current exclusive and dysfunctional international order, the rapprochement with the Asian country responds to a regional collective interest.
The head of Cuban diplomacy called for further progress in ties with the Asian giant because of its respectful nature of international law focused on development and mutual benefit - and because it is an essential element of the immediate and long-term future.
Rodriguez highlighted the recent meeting in Moscow between the top leaders of Cuba and China, while reiterating the commitment to advance the implementation of common consensuses and priorities.
He also recalled that Havana was the natural scene for the constitution of the China-Celac Forum (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) and emphasized the pride that this represents for the largest of the Antilles.
We will always continue to defend the principle of a single China, taking into account Chinese interests and admiring and recognizing the role China plays as a great player in international relations, he added.
For his part, Wang Yi highlighted the mediation role played by Cuba among the participating countries of the upcoming China-Celac ministerial forum, key to the success of the event.
The chancellor recalled that this year marks the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations and underlined the special friendship that unites both peoples, governments and Communist parties.
Wang Yi noted that the China-Cuba links represent a model of cooperation among developing countries, based on mutual trust, solidarity and support for unilateralism and external interference.
Foreign Affairs Minister Bruno Rodriguez arrived in this capital the day before to participate in the fourth ministerial meeting of the China-Celac Forum.
Tomorrow the meeting will bring together almost twenty foreign ministers and other senior representatives of the region, in addition to the presidents of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, from Colombia, Gustavo Petro, and from Chile, Gabriel Boric.
According to the Foreign Ministry here, the event will allow the Asian giant and FTA to address development strategies and common challenges, strengthen the collective voice of the Global South for solidarity and self-reliance, and convey stability in a context of uncertainties.
Chinese President Xi Jinping reiterated to his Cuban counterpart, Miguel Díaz-Canel, recently in Moscow Beijing's support for the island in the defense of its national sovereignty and reaffirmed the rejection of interference and blockade, while stressing the accompaniment in Cuba's economic and social development.
As important members of the Global South, the two sides should strengthen coordination and cooperation within the framework of the Brics and the China-Celac Forum, oppose unilateral power policy and intimidation, and defend international equity and justice, he added. (Text and photos: PL)
