Mexico City, July 18 – In the last few hours, the mayor of the Cuauhtémoc District, Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, decided—without prior notice—to remove the sculptures from the monumental complex dedicated to Fidel and Che Guevara, located in the popular Colonia Tabacalera in Mexico City.
This monument, called "Encuentro," was designed by artist Óscar Ponzanelli (Mexico, 1966–2024) and honors the site where Fidel Castro Ruz and Ernesto Che Guevara de la Serna met, given its proximity to María Antonia González's home, located at 49 Emperán Street in the Colonia Tabacalera of Mexico City.
The entire monument weighs approximately 250 kilograms, including the bench, and was inaugurated on December 2, 2017.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum gave instructions this morning to relocate sculptural ensemble to another location in Mexico City.
The traditional bonds of brotherhood between the two nations do not give rest to minor actions that seek to put at risk that Fidel and Che remain present in the everyday imagination of the Mexican people. (Text and Photo: Cubadebate)
