Moscow, Feb 26.- Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated today that the incident involving a boat with a US registration off the coast of Cuba was provoked by Washington to heighten tensions.
This is an aggressive provocation by the United States, whose purpose is to escalate the situation and trigger conflict, emphasized the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Eurasian giant.
Yesterday, Cuba's Ministry of the Interior reported that in the morning hours, a fast intruder boat was detected within Cuban territorial waters bearing a Florida, USA registration, with license plate FL7726SH, which approached within one nautical mile northeast of El Pino channel, at Falcones key, Corralillo municipality, in the central province of Villa Clara.
When a surface unit of the Border Guard Troops of the Ministry of the Interior, with five combatants, approached for identification, fire was opened from the intruder boat against the Cuban personnel, resulting in the commander of the Cuban vessel being injured, according to the statement released by the entity.
Following the interception, a confrontation occurred in which four aggressors were killed and six injured, reported the Caribbean nation's authorities, while adding that the wounded were evacuated and received medical assistance.
Later, the Ministry of the Interior of the largest of the Antilles added that the 10 people on board the US vessel were citizens of the Caribbean island, residing in the northern nation.
All participants are Cuban residents in the United States. Most of them have a known history of criminal and violent activity related to the promotion, planning, organization, financing, support, or commission of actions carried out within national territory or in other countries, in connection with acts of terrorism, the Ministry explained.
In this regard, the institution noted that the detained individuals admitted during preliminary interrogations their intention to infiltrate Cuba for terrorist purposes.
Furthermore, authorities also detained a Cuban citizen sent from the United States to ensure the reception of the armed infiltration, who at this moment has confessed to his actions, the ministry specified.
Likewise, it reported that assault rifles, short weapons, handmade explosive devices (Molotov cocktails), bulletproof vests, telescopic sights, and camouflage uniforms were seized during the process.
In this sense, the entity argued that an investigation is underway to definitively establish what happened.
Likewise, it warned that given the current challenges, Cuba reaffirms its will to protect its territorial waters, based on the fact that national defense is a fundamental pillar for the Cuban State in favor of protecting its sovereignty and stability in the region. (Text and photo: PL)
