US blockade against Cuba hinders fight against Covid-19

Havana, Sep 25 - The intensification of the United States blockade hinders Cuba's fight against the Covid-19 pandemic today, said the island's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez.

Speaking at the XX Meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), held this Wednesday virtually, Rodríguez denounced that Washington's unilateral coercive measures hinder the sustainable development of the Cuban people.

He pointed out that the increase in the aggressiveness of that northern power occurs at a time when the island is making efforts to contain the expansion of Covid-19 in its territory and in other nations, and includes the promotion of a defamatory campaign against its international collaboration in matters of health.

At the forum, which brought together foreign ministers and vice chancellors from more than twenty countries in the region, the island's chief of diplomacy pointed out that this hostile policy constitutes a violation of international law.

He pointed out that the White House sanctions also affect other nations in the region such as Venezuela and Nicaragua, equally immersed in the confrontation with the complex epidemiological situation caused by Covid-19.

He warned that this health crisis will cause the largest economic contraction in the history of the region, which is why he highlighted the urgency of strengthening cooperation between Latin American and Caribbean nations.

United, without exclusions of any nature, complementing each other and sharing the resources at our disposal, we can face the common challenges in better conditions, said the Cuban diplomat. (Latin Press)
