12 kilometers of new passageways are found in the world's largest cave system

The Mammoth Cave (Colossal Cave) cave system, located in the state of Kentucky (USA) and considered the most extensive in the world, is now even more extensive and already contains about 676 kilometers (420 miles) of caves and passageways, as more than 12.8 kilometers (8 miles) of new passageways were found.

The Cueva Colosal National Park reported on the discovery this September 12 on its Facebook account. "When it comes to discoveries at Mammoth Cave, there really is no end in sight," reads the publication.

The discovery was the work of volunteers from the non-profit organization Cave Research Foundation, by mapping and exploring the cave system. It is not the first time that its members discover new extensions there, since every year they visit the park precisely in order to find more passages. (Text and photo: RT)
