Cuban civil society and government in Brussels summit with a constructive spirit


Havana, Jul 13.- Cuba will attend the III CELAC-EU Summit and its social segment, with a constructive spirit and to reach regional consensus, officials from the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), the MINREX and the parliament ratified today on the television program Mesa Redonda.

The interest of a respectful, fair, balanced and participatory bi-regional dialogue will mark the agenda of Cuba and Latin America, the president of ICAP, Fernando González, affirmed in the space.

Likewise, the official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba (MINREX) Vilma Thomas, and the president of the International Relations Commission of the National Assembly of People's Power (ANPP-parliament), Rolando González, who detailed the background and the current context of the quote.

Simultaneous to the official meeting between the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union (EU), the peoples' summit will take place on July 17 and 18, which previously issued a declaration of principles with several edges.

The also Hero of the Republic of Cuba, Fernando González, mentioned among them: the guarantee of a balanced relationship between both integrating blocks, launching a road map against the climate crisis, strengthening the declaration of Latin America as a Zone of Peace, among other matters.

The delegation of the largest of the Antilles to the CELAC-EU summit of peoples is made up of civil society organizations, represented in the Cuban Association of the United Nations, the Martin Luther King Center, the Cuban chapter of the Network in Defense of Humanity.

In addition, the National Association of Economists and Accountants of Cuba, biotechnological institutions that produce vaccines and medicines, the Union of Young Communists, the Federation of Cuban Women, university students, culture and non-state actors of the economy will also be present in Brussels.

Some nine panels of organizations and social movements of various signs will discuss diplomacy for peace, against the blockade and the impact of the inclusion of Cuba in the unilateral US list of countries sponsoring terrorism, as well as the actions of the media, in addition to a wide diversity of subjects.

The president of ICAP stressed that the People's Summit will become a space for dialogue and collective construction of Latin American civil society, it will be the voice of the people, with a pronouncement from the perspective of nations, articulated in various platforms, social movements, parties’ politicians and other social actors.

Regarding the meeting of leaders of CELAC and the EU, the MINREX official Vilma Thomas, explained that both regions will seek to build a fair and balanced bi-regional relationship.

Despite the differences, there is space to build balanced, supportive and cooperative relations with the EU, on issues such as financing for the development of Latin American nations, investment, trade, innovation and the post-COVID-pandemic recovery 19, among other matters.

In this context, a pronouncement from the summit is expected to reject the coercive measures against the Caribbean nation, especially the US blockade due to the damage it causes to the Cuban population, and its extraterritorial effect that also harms Europe, Thomas assured.

In this sense, the president of the International Relations Commission of the ANPP, Rolando González, rejected the approval of an interventionist resolution today in the European Parliament that defames the Cuban reality, its legal system and Cuba's relations with other countries of the world. .

He denounced that the Caribbean nation is unfairly accused of human rights violations, alleged disappearances of people, as well as practicing slave labor with Cuban health professionals.

At the same time, a group of MEPs is totally unaware of the existence of the US economic blockade, he said, which is an ethical breach that runs counter to the position of rejection of the rest of the European Council bodies.

This position of the European legislature aims to fracture the relationship that has been built since 2016 between Cuba and the EU within the framework of the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement.
