Peruvian poet expresses solidarity with Cuba in the face of the Trump administration's onslaught

Havana, July 15 – Prominent Peruvian poet Marco Martos expressed his solidarity with Cuba in the face of recent measures by US President Donald Trump, which have further intensified the economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba.

The award-winning poet made this comment in an interview with Prensa Latina regarding Trump's recent memorandum, which, among other measures, prohibits his compatriots from visiting Cuba for tourism, hinders remittances from migrants in the United States to their families in Cuba, and threatens retaliation against countries that receive Cuban medical assistance.

“Given this series of measures taken by the Trump administration against Cuba, we can only express our solidarity with the Caribbean people,” said the former president of the Peruvian Academy of Language.

Martos added that these measures, along with so many others Trump has taken against the island, mean that the US president has returned to his old ways, in a more targeted and profound way, with measures that do not benefit the people of the United States.

He noted that "surely the American people will prevent Trump and his people from perpetuating themselves in government," which he considered to be hopeful for Americans and the world.

"The persecution of a country in a ruthless way, with the purpose of isolating it more and more, has always proved to be fruitless; in the long run, the situation will have to change," he said.

The poet also stated that Trump doesn't understand that his measures, in general, endanger the entire world.

“I firmly hope that Cuba will resist as it always has and that it will receive the support, if not unanimous, then massive, of different countries and people around the world,” he asserted. (Text and photo: PL)
