Panama hosts Latin American forum of environment ministers during Climate Week

Panama City, October 23.- Today Panama hosts the XXIII Meeting of the Forum of Ministers of the Environment of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), coinciding with Climate Week.

According to the organizing committee, until next October 27, this event will be a space for political dialogue and collaboration of a mechanism established in 1982, whose main role is to provide a space for governments to establish priorities for environmental action.

The hybrid format of this meeting, after the previous edition having been held completely virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic, will represent an opportunity to resume regional and subregional collaboration for the sake of sustainable development that leaves no one behind and that accelerate the response to the triple global environmental crisis (climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution).

This 2023 meeting will be preceded by the High Level Officials Meeting, on October 24 and 25; and by the Regional Consultative Meeting for civil society, at the offices of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

The exchanges will feature high-level representatives of the region's governments, secretariats of multilateral environmental agreements, research and academic organizations, civil society organizations, and regional and global institutions of collaboration for development.

Topics such as water security and resilience during the El Niño weather phenomenon stand out on the agenda, in addition to regional cooperation for the sustainable management of the oceans, among others.

At the conclusion of the conclave, the results will be reflected in a Final Declaration to present to the governments of the region.

In this edition, the Forum will be held in parallel with the Latin American and Caribbean Climate Week, organized by the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which will allow exploring synergies with the work that is carried out under this multilateral agreement.

Among the axes of the week, the meeting of Latin American and Caribbean cities that will evaluate the Global Compact of Mayors for Climate and Energy stands out. (Text and photo: PL)
