President of the UN General Assembly for ceasefire in Gaza

United Nations, Oct 26.- The president of the General Assembly of the United Nations, Dennis Francis, today called for an end to violence and a ceasefire in the conflict in Gaza during the emergency session convened by the forum.

The solution is to avoid bloodshed, the release of hostages, the opening of humanitarian corridors to bring supplies to the enclave, Francis insisted when opening the meeting, and recalled the importance of the creation of two States to end the hostilities.

“Once again, we meet in the midst of the most serious escalation of violence and hostility in the Middle East in decades,” he said, adding that this must end now by calling the constant bombings against the Palestinian population in the enclave barbarism. Israel's right to self-defense cannot allow an attack of that magnitude, he claimed.

The General Assembly meets this Thursday in compliance with the historic Union for Peace resolution, adopted by the forum in 1950.

The body can convene a special emergency session within 24 hours, in the event that the Security Council “fails to exercise its primary responsibility” to maintain international peace and security.

The tenth emergency special session was first convened in April 1997, at the request of Qatar following a series of meetings of the Security Council and the General Assembly regarding the Israeli decision to build a large housing project in an area of East Jerusalem.

It met for the last time on June 13, 2018 to consider a draft resolution entitled Protection of the Palestinian civilian population. (Text and photo: PL)
