Moscow, May 8. - The United States (USA) is preparing to begin production in May of its new B61-13 nuclear bombs, a weapon 24 times more powerful than the one launched on Japan at the end of World War II, declared this Wednesday Teresa Robbins, acting head of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA)
During a hearing of the House Armed Services Committee, Robbins announced that production of the new thermonuclear bombs is expected to begin this May.
"The NNSA expects the first production unit of the B61-13 to be ready later this month, almost a year ahead of schedule," she said.
The Department of Defense announced in late October 2023 its plans to develop an updated version of the B61 nuclear bomb, identified as the B61-13. At the time, it was stated that the decision to modernize the bomb met "the demands of a rapidly evolving security environment."
In addition, it was clarified that the B61-13 could be launched by modern aircraft and would replace some of the B61-7 in the current nuclear arsenal.
The power of the new nuclear bomb will be equivalent to that of the B61-7, with about 360 kilotons, which exceeds by 24 times the power of the Little Boy (15 kilotons) that the US dropped on Hiroshima (Japan), and by about 14 times the Fat Man, dropped on Nagasaki (25 kilotons). (Text and photo: RT)
