Artemisa, October 31.- For a moment I thought I lived in a more populated place, not in the middle of this peace of isolated houses with large gardens: the cries of euphoria broke the usual silence. "Gold!" "Gold!" “Idalys!” even though victory was expected, nothing stopped her from making half of Cuba jump out of her seats.
Idalys Ortiz from Artemisa won her fourth gold medal in the Pan American Games, and responded to the trust of those who decided to champion her at the head of the Cuban delegation to the event in Santiago de Chile, along with Julio César la Cruz from Camagüey.
Moments later, the social network Facebook was filled with comments about the excellence of the natural judoka from the Godínez neighborhood, in Candelaria, Artemisa. Every second, the number of congratulations for the champion grows.
Many take the photo that highlights their four crowns and make it viral by publishing it in their biographies. Meanwhile, Yoandro Rodrigues created an infographic in which he praised that quality that does not fade despite her 34 years.
And Jose Manuel Valido alluded to the feat of fulfilling her mission, not only as a standard bearer but as an icon of judo in the Largest of the Antilles, perhaps the safest warrior to contribute that gold medal to the Cuban medal table.
Meanwhile, Michel Milan pointed out that, upon seeing her win, he immediately thought of his teacher Ronaldo Veitía. “How much satisfaction, wherever he is!”
The capricious organization chart placed one of her fiercest opponents in recent times, the Brazilian judoka Beatriz Souza, capable of beating her even more than once, in her own C key, and she had to face her in the first fight. But Idalys did not fail, warned Wilmar Pérez Torres.
And, after the triumph of the citizen of Artemisa, along with the scepters of Andy Granda and Iván Silva today, plus those of Maylín del Toro and Idelannis Gómez yesterday, others more daring affirmed that judo is the true flagship of Cuban sport, in this moment.
The truth is that it has been a Monday of pride and glory for Cuba in Santiago de Chile, and that Idalys Ortiz achieved her fourth consecutive coronation, after reigning in Guadalajara 2011, Toronto 2015 and Lima 2019.
The history of someone who has won four Olympic medals and two world titles, among 70 other medals in all types of tournaments, grows colossally. After 15 years in the elite, she remains the undisputed Queen of America. (Text and photo: ACN)
