Another fifth place for Cuban judo at Asunción 2025

Asunción 12 Aug.- Cuba achieved its second fifth place in the judo tournament of the second edition of the Pan American Junior Games in Asunción, losing Wendy Martínez by ippon in the bronze medal discussion in the 63 kilogram (kg) category against Mexico's María Cruz.

According to the website of the Paraguayan multisport event, Cruz’s victory came after 9:37 minutes of acting on the mat in the Golden Rule, four of these from complementary time.

The Cuban went into extra time with two warnings (shidos), so she did her best to avoid the third warning that ultimately left her with fifth place.

The Golden Rule proved very technical for both judokas, as the Mexican was also penalized with two shidos in this decisive stage for whoever scored first or caused the warning of the rival.

In the heats, Martínez defeated Colombian Ingrid Deniela Choco by yuko, but lost the same way in the quarterfinals to American Shely Daniela Jaspe, who prevented her from reaching the final.

The other Cuban in action on the mats was Cristian Cordero (73 kg), who lost by ippon in his first match of preliminaries against the Mexican Rafael Ramírez.

This Sunday, Yainet Coronado (48 kg) was in fifth place, disputed the bronze, while Yoel Hernández (60 kg) and Adel Fresneda (66 kg) also did not reach the podium.

This Tuesday, Cubans Naysdel Cardoso (90 kg), the flag bearer Zail Ramírez (100 kg), Jonathan Delgado (over 100 kg), Lisliaris González (78 kg), and Dayanara Curbelo (over 78 kg) are scheduled to compete.

Cardoso will face Venezuelan Samuel Corzo, Ramírez will face the winner of the bout between Brazilian Gustavo Milano and Venezuelan Gustavo Canizalez, Delgado will face Canadian John Messe, González will face Paraguayan Nahyr Augelacio, and Curbelo will face Costa Rican Arianna Chaves.

The mixed team tournament is scheduled for Wednesday, with action in the divisions of 73, 90 and more than 90 kg (men) and 57, 70 and more than 70 (women). (Text and photo: Cubadebate)
