Cuba denounces violations of the blockade on the right to well-being at the United Nations (+ Post)

United Nations, Nov 2.- The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, denounced today at the United Nations General Assembly the violations against the right to life, education and well-being of Cubans caused by the United States blockade.

Families in the country feel it in the shortages, excessive prices and devalued salaries, said the head of Foreign Affairs when speaking before the forum, gathered to vote on the resolution presented by the Caribbean country on the need to end the siege.

Rodríguez recalled the efforts of the Government of Havana to guarantee the basic basket to the population despite the obstacles imposed.

Only with one third of the cost of the effects of the blockade from March 2022 to February 2023 could the expenses for this concept have been covered, he asserted.

At the same time, sectors such as agriculture or energy face serious obstacles to acquiring spare parts or machinery.

Under strict licenses, some agricultural products in the United States travel to the island subject to draconian and discriminatory laws that violate international trade regulations, he assured.

These products, he added, arrive on North American ships that have to return empty due to the blockade itself.

The Cuban Foreign Minister recalled the intensification of harassment policies during the harshest years of the pandemic, when exemption from sanctions for humanitarian reasons was promoted in some cases.

“Why was Cuba excluded from this temporary relief?” Rodríguez questioned in rejection of the use of the pandemic as an ally of Washington in its policy towards Cuba.

The impact on the quality of life and the services provided to the population is painful, he emphasized. (Text and photos: PL)
