Havana, Dec 5.- The Azucarero Sugar Business Group plans to produce 1,100 tons of sorbitol next year, an item with wide applications in several industries, said a source in the sector.
In conversation with Prensa Latina, the director of Derivatives of that entity, Carlos González, specified that the factory of this product, located in Camaguey, operates from January to January. He added that the previous year that facility was inactive.
Sorbitol is mainly obtained from the catalytic hydrogenation of glucose, although it is also formed fermentatively as a byproduct of ethanol manufacturing.
It is a product with a sweet and fresh flavor, it constitutes a nutrient similar to sugar with almost the same energy value, which is used in the manufacture of low-calorie foods and for diabetics.
Also in the production of toothpastes, vitamin C, moisturizing agent and skin lotions. In addition, its properties as an inhibitor are valuable for bleaching and degreasing fabrics and for etching on aluminum, among other applications.
In addition to sorbitol, Azcuba produces sugar and animal feed, energy, alcohols and spirits and rums, glucose, wax, boards, syrups and various medications, among other derivatives. (Text and photo: PL)
