Cuba and Eurasian Economic Union agree on deepening integration and cooperation


Havana, February 2.- Cuba and the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) agree that the conditions are created to advance towards a qualitatively higher phase in their relations, Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz stated today.

Speaking at the meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council, which takes place until this Friday in Almaty, Republic of Kazakhstan, the head of Government highlighted that his country continues to promote a closer and more diverse exchange with the Member States and observers of the Union.

A reliable example of this, he stressed, was the celebration in the month of January of the Third Session of the Joint Commission between Cuba and the Eurasian Economic Commission, in which Serguei Glaziev, member of the College and Minister of Integration and Macroeconomics, and a large delegation with businessmen.

In this exchange, the need to promote ties with the countries of the region at the business level was highlighted, in correspondence with the respective development plans and strategic guidelines, indicated the Cuban premier.

He mentioned the circulation of medicines and medical devices, agribusiness and business activities as some of the areas of interest to deepen economic integration and cooperation between the EEU and Cuba, reflected in the Protocol of the third meeting of the Joint Commission.

Elaborating on the meeting, Marrero Cruz said that projects for the production of medicines and biotechnological development in the Eurasian region were presented; linked to the sugar agroindustry, another related to the transformation of the meat and dairy complex, and the need to deepen interbank ties was identified, as a preliminary step for relations.

The Cuban Prime Minister announced the invitation to Cuba to participate in the Eurasian Fair and the International Economic Forum of Saint Petersburg, and thanked him for the opportunity, highlighting that these spaces will contribute to strengthening inter-business ties, specifying interests and diversifying ties.

"I reaffirm Cuba's commitment to comply with the decisions and agreements approved in this session of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council, in pursuit of expanding our economic, commercial, financial and cooperation ties, with the conviction that united we will be stronger," he stated.

The Eurasian Economic Union was established in 2015 and is made up of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia; and as observer members, by Moldova, Uzbekistan and Cuba.

The largest of the Antilles signed a memorandum of understanding with the bloc in 2018, under which a joint working group was established, and in 2020 it was incorporated as an observer member. (ACN) (Photo: Revolución Studies)
