
Havana, March 13.- With the presence of Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and President of the Republic, the annual work meeting of the Ministry of Public Health (Minsap) was held., where the work carried out during 2023 and the projections for the current year were analyzed.
Díaz-Canel highlighted the commitment of the workers in this sector, who maintain the vitality of medical services despite the shortage of medicines and supplies, as a consequence of the intensification of the economic blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba.
He called for more science and innovation to be promoted in the search for alternatives to provide a higher quality of medical care to the population.
In reading the report, Dr. José Angel Portal Miranda, minister of the organization, stated that in this period various services to the population affected by COVID-19 were recovered.
As main results, the head of the Minsap highlighted the presence of Cuban doctors in 53 countries, the improvement in the infant mortality rate and the development of more than one million medical consultations with respect to 2022.
He highlighted that 16 thousand pediatric surgeries were carried out, in addition 104 clinical trials were carried out throughout the country and the international accreditation of the Latin American School of Medicine.
Portal Miranda considered the approval of a new Public Health law, which has the challenge of being applied ethically and fulfilling its postulates in each scenario.
He warned about the aging population of Cuban society, since 22.3 percent of them are over 60 years old and demand differentiated attention and greater training of professionals from the army of white coats.
As negative indicators, he pointed out a significant reduction in births, an increase in teenage pregnancy, a large exodus of professionals to other sectors and the lack of personnel in 21 specialties, deficiencies that demand analysis and the development of new strategies.
He determined as work projections to strengthen primary health care, the ideological preparation of cadres and undergraduate and graduate training.
Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz called for control and confrontation of crime and corruption in the illicit sale of medicines and medical supplies and to better prepare doctors in language and computerization skills.
Also attending the meeting were Jorge Luis Perdomo Di-Lella, Vice Prime Minister of Cuba, and Jorge Luis Broche Lorenzo, member of the Secretariat and Head of the Department of Attention to the Social Sector of the Central Committee of the PCC. (Text and photo: ACN)
