Cuban Presentations at Mesoamerican Congress of native bees

Havana, Dec. 5. - Three papers from Cuba were presented this Thursday at the XIV Mesoamerican Congress of Native Bees held at the University of Costa Rica, among them The productive chain of Melipona bee honey.

This research is linked to the Melicuma local development project in the municipality of Cumanayagua, Cienfuegos province.

Its authors, Laura Alpízar Peña and Osvaldo Rodríguez Arencibia, propose actions to improve this chain, starting with local production by beekeepers.

Melicuma is the first project of its kind in this province in central and southern Cuba, and already has a store to sell products prepared from the beehive's products.

Among the topics presented from Cuba was the research on the Characterization of Meliponiculture in the urban area of ??San Nicolás de Bari, Mayabeque, by Professor Walberto Loriga Pena, PhD, one of the most experienced scientists studying the subject.

Loriga Pena is among the authors of the Manual of Meliponiculture of Cuba, one of the most widely used theoretical tools for men and women dedicated to this activity in the country.

The study "Women Meliponiculturists of Cuba: A contributing group, through their knowledge, to the production and diversification of the so-called 'land bees'" was also discussed in plenary.

This women's group came together on the WhatsApp social network, and this platform became a space for training, interaction, knowledge exchange, and solidarity.

At the event, which concludes its theoretical segment today, 50 posters and 120 presentations were given by participants from 16 countries in Mesoamerica and the United States.

An exhibition fair showed potential in the diversification of the rows of the hive and the power that has in the area the development of native bees, with a wide variety of species. (ACN) (Photo: Internet)
