Cuba bets on healthy and productive soils

Havana, November 6 - An initiative between the Ministry of Agriculture, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the Green Climate Fund (GCF) is making progress in improving soil health in Cuba through the implementation of forestry, agroforestry, and silvopastoral systems.

With funding of US$38.2 million, the Climate Resilience in Agricultural Ecosystems (IRES) project is the first GCF initiative in Cuba and the fourth promoted by the FAO in the region.

The project coordinator, Wilfredo Arregui, detailed the benefits for farmers, who now have healthier soils and stronger plants, in addition to reducing fertilizers and irrigation.

Since 2019, thanks to IRES, more than 15,000 agricultural hectares have been recovered in seven municipalities, degraded by marabou and drought. (Radio Reloj) (Photo: Taken from the Internet)
