Parliament of Cuba analyzes strategies to strengthen food production


Havana, April 9.- The deputies members of the Economic and Agri-Food Affairs commissions of the National Assembly of People's Power of Cuba (ANPP, Parliament) analyzed strategies to contribute to the organization and strengthening of food production programs.

By videoconference, from the National Capitol, they highlighted how much such a sensitive and vital program can advance, with the view and promotion of parliamentary activity in all the municipalities, as reported by the Legislature on its website.

The president of the Parliament's Agri-Food Commission, Ramón Aguilar, referred to the deficiencies during 2023 in the contracting of agricultural production and to the control and verification mechanisms on the legality of land ownership.

Regarding the functions and responsibility of the local Administration Councils in regulating and setting prices in their areas, he reflected on the implementation of the recently approved decree law to coordinate and streamline the management of agricultural cooperatives.

For his part, the Cuban Vice Minister of Economy and Planning (MEP), Roberto Pérez, highlighted the existence in the Caribbean nation of three essential tools for food production and that affect the evaluation and creation of local balances in this sense.

These are the municipal development strategies, Law 148 on Food Sovereignty and Food and Nutritional Security, and the Economy Plan approved in all territories and territorial governments, the official exemplified.

Likewise, the president of the Parliament's Economic Affairs Committee, Félix Martínez, stressed that these issues respond to the National Development Plan until 2030 on the island and that they are raised with priority within the process of implementing the Government's measures to correct distortions. and re-boost the economy during 2024.

He also pointed out the need to look for lines of financing in these agri-food areas to increase offers to the people and contribute, in a sustained manner, to the organization and strengthening of food production programs.

The participants in the meeting also learned about the progress of the accountability exercise of the Ministry of Domestic Trade to the Cuban Legislature, in the coming month of July. (Text and photo: PL)
