New York, April 19.- Cuban Lola Amores won the award for Best Actress at the Havana Film Festival in New York for her performance in the film Una noche con los Rolling Stones, by director Patricia Ramos.
Ramos thanked the award during the Havana Star award ceremony on behalf of the protagonist whom he recognized for her contributions to the film.
For its part, the film Heroico, by David Zonana from Mexico, was awarded as Best Fiction Film, a section that also gave a special mention to Memento Mori, by Fernando López Cardona, from Colombia.
The Franco-Colombian production Transfariana received the award for Best Documentary, while the Argentine film El Castillo was honored with a special mention in that category.
Jhon Narváez was selected as Best Actor for his performance in Rebelión, a Colombian-Argentine production that tells the story of the singer and composer from Cartagena Joe Arroyo.
In addition, the film The Monroy Case, from Peru and Venezuela, was awarded as Best Screenplay and the writer Carolina Markowicz received the award as Best Director for Pedágio, a joint production from Brazil and Portugal.
After its official opening on April 12, the Havana Film Festival left space for the screening of more than thirty Latin American films, mostly world and local premieres.
The billboard brought films from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, Panama, Uruguay and other countries in the region.
The official selection for 2024 included among the films the Cuban films Under a powerful sun, by Enrique Kike Álvarez; The world of Nelsito, by Fernando Pérez; The Wild Woman, by Alán González; and A Night with the Rolling Stones, by Patricia Ramos.
At the same time, the Cuban documentaries Landrián, by Ernesto Daranas; Return, by Blanca Rosa Blanco; Santa Canción, by Juan Carlos Travieso; and The Legend of Arsenio, by Rolando Almirante, reached New York screens for the first time thanks to the contest.
The 24th edition also dedicated its spaces to two cult filmmakers of the seventh art on the island: the film director Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and the documentary filmmaker Nicolás Guillén Landrián, whose works were also screened at the Hosftra University in New York. (Text and photo: PL)
