Havana, 18 Jun. - The Cuban Film Library begins today a cycle dedicated to the figure of Alfredo Guevara, founder of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC, for its acronym in Spanish), to commemorate the centenary of his birth.
Guevara (1925-2013), also founder of the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema, carried out extensive and highly recognized work as a film critic, and this forum from June 18-29 is dedicated to him.
With the title "The exercise of criticism according to Alfredo Guevara", the exhibition is part of a comprehensive special program until the end of December, just the month (day 31) of the celebration of the 100 years of the filmmaker, and will be exhibited at Cinema 23 and 12, the cultural institution's usual venue.
The cycle is devoted to the memory of the intellectual, and his cultural and revolutionary thought; several tapes will be presented which were analyzed by the critic in the dissimilar cultural media to which he lent his written voice, as published by the Icaic site on the social network Facebook.
Upcoming film selections will explore Guevara's relationship with Italian neorealist films and a selection of those feature films that, in his opinion, were the best of all time.
Guevara was also Professor Emeritus at the Higher Institute of Art, an institution that awarded him the title of doctor honoris causa in art. He was associated with UNESCO in the field of cultural policy and was Cuba’s ambassador to that organization representing the nation on the Executive Council, of which he became a member.
