International Court begins hearing on the Mexican lawsuit against Ecuador

Moscow, April 30.- The International Court of Justice (ICJ), the judicial body of the United Nations (UN), has begun the hearing on the Mexican lawsuit against Ecuador for the assault on its embassy. The Court will review the request for provisional measures against the Government of Daniel Noboa on April 30 and the 1st. of May.

It is mainly about the protection of the diplomatic headquarters, and the assets found inside, which were abandoned after the departure of the Mexican mission due to the conflict. The statement from the highest international court indicates that the hearings will be public and may be attended, in addition to those involved, by the press and the general public.

On April 11, the Government of Mexico announced the details of said lawsuit. Thus, Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena detailed the claims that the Administration headed by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador presented to the highest body of justice of the UN, which are:

1. Judge and declare that Ecuador is responsible for the damage that the violations of its international obligations have caused, and continue to cause, to Mexico.

2. The suspension of Ecuador as a member of the UN, until a public apology is issued, recognizing the violations of the fundamental principles and norms of international law, to guarantee reparation for the moral damage inflicted on the Mexican State and its nationals.

3. Judge and declare that, in the event of a violation of the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, similar to that committed by Ecuador, the International Court of Justice is the appropriate judicial body to determine the responsibility of a State in order to initiate the expulsion process, under article 6 of said letter.

4. Establish the precedent that any State or country that acts as Ecuador did, will be definitively expelled from the UN, based on the evaluation provided for in Article 6 of the organization's Charter.

5. Due to the relevance of the events that occurred, the International Court of Justice may present the expulsion of the State that violated international law, in a quick and expeditious procedure before the UN Security Council, avoiding the veto of its members. .

For its part, the Government of Ecuador sued Mexico before the International Court for non-compliance with the rules of political asylum and the “insults” of President AMLO.

On April 5, the Ecuadorian National Police forcibly entered the Mexican Embassy in Quito after the former Ecuadorian vice president, Jorge Glas, requested political asylum from Mexico. After the events, the politician was transferred to the La Roca maximum security prison, in the city of Guayaquil.
