51 years after the coup d'état, Chileans continue to demand justice (+ Photos)

Santiago de Chile, September 11.- With tributes to the victims of the dictatorship and calls to search for the missing detainees, Chileans will remember today the 51st anniversary of the coup d'état against the Popular Unity government.

On September 11, 1973, tanks and military planes attacked the La Moneda Palace and other buildings and overthrew the government of President Salvador Allende.

Augusto Pinochet, who was then commander in chief of the army, led the coup that gave way to a 17-year dictatorship, during which more than 40,000 crimes against humanity were committed, including torture, murders and disappearances.

Fifty-one years after those events, there are still more than 1,100 people whose whereabouts are unknown.

Under the motto “The years of impunity will not silence our cries for justice,” the Party and the Communist Youth called for a march this Wednesday from La Alameda Avenue to the monument to the former president, in the Plaza de la Constitución.

The pilgrimage will pass in front of the Morandé 80 gate, the place where Allende's lifeless body was removed on the day of the coup.

“I'm not going to resign. Placed in a historic transit, I will pay with my life for the loyalty of the people... You continue to know that, much sooner rather than later, the great avenues through which the free man passes will open again to build a better society," said the former president in his last speech.

On the occasion of September 11, an event led by Gabriel Boric will take place in the Patio de los Naranjos, at the presidential headquarters, where government authorities, parliamentarians and relatives of detained, disappeared and executed politicians, among other guests, will participate.

A day of commemoration will also be held in the Villa Grimaldi Peace Park, which during the dictatorship (1973-1990) functioned as a center for kidnapping, torture and extermination of opponents. (Text and photos: PL)
