Fujimori, Peru

Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori died, his lawyer announced

Lima, 12 Sep.- Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori died today, his lawyer, Elio Riera, said.

After a long battle against cancer, our father, Alberto Fujimori, has just left to meet the Lord. We ask those who appreciated him to accompany us with a prayer for the eternal rest of his soul. Thank you for so much Dad, your children, Keiko, Hiro, Sachie and Kenji Fujimori, wrote on the X network.

Previously, the lawyer of the former governor, Elio Riera, announced by the same means: Mr. President: rest in peace. His legacy will last in history.

From the early hours it was reported that the patient had become aggravated, confirmed by his GP, Congressman Alejandro Aguinaga, when he went to see him at Fujimori's daughter Keiko's house.

The 86-year-old former governor, unlike other times when he had suffered from a health breakdown, was not taken to a clinic or hospital and remained at the home of his eldest daughter, Keiko Fujimori.

He remained there, from December 2023, when he was released for a controversial pardon annulated by the justice system but revalidated by the Constitutional Court.

The youngest son of the former governor, Kenji, left the house almost in tears, without declaring to the press, while medical sources pointed out that when a serious patient is not transferred to a hospital it means that there is nothing science can do to save him anymore.

Hours before the death was reported, journalist Martín Sarmiento, of the journalistic portal La Mula, cited government sources to state that the Government had been informed of the death and only the official announcement of the family was expected.

Fujimori ruled Peru with a heavy hand from 1990 to 2000 and his followers attribute to him having stabilized the economy and driven growth, while his detractors questioned him about the massacres and other human rights violations recorded during his government.

For two of these massacres, in 2007 he was extradited from Chile and sentenced to 25 years in prison, although he did not serve his entire conviction for the pardon last December, and when he died, another trial was pending for another massacre of innocent civilians.

When he was taken for granted withdrawal from politics, last June Fujimori enrolled in his daughter's Popular Force party and used social Internet networks to claim what he considered his political legacy.

The party registration is in Peru a requirement to be a candidate for the presidency and Keiko Fujimori said that her father, despite his advanced age, should be a presidential candidate of his party in the elections scheduled for 2026. (Text and Photo: PL)
