China supports for Cuba against US blockade and sanctions

Beijing, Oct 31.- The Chinese Foreign Ministry today welcomed the majority support of the international community for Cuba against the United States blockade and demanded the immediate elimination of this hostile policy.

Once again the UN General Assembly adopted a relevant resolution with an overwhelming majority of 187 votes, demonstrating the firm support for the Cuban people in their just struggle to safeguard sovereignty and oppose external interference and the blockade, said spokesman Lin. Jian in response to a question from Prensa Latina.

In the spokesperson's opinion, this shows that the unilateral and intimidating actions of the United States, which seriously violate the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, are overwhelmingly condemned by the international community.

The spokesperson denounced the deep suffering that these coercive measures cause to the island's people.

According to data from Cuba, the United States blockade in the last six decades has cost Cuba more than 160 billion dollars, of which more than five billion dollars were lost between March 2023 and February 2024, affecting almost all areas of subsistence, including food, medicine and energy, he declared.

Lin reaffirmed the Asian giant's opposition to this siege and Washington's sanctions.

Since 1992, for 32 consecutive years, China has voted in favor of the Cuba resolution, calling for the end of this blockade imposed by the United States in the UN General Assembly, he added.

The spokesperson stressed that Beijing will maintain its position firmly in favor of international equity and justice and will continue to support the Cuban people in their resistance against external interference, in defense of their sovereignty and national dignity.

The day before, the UN General Assembly adopted with 187 votes in favor, two against and one abstention the thirty-second resolution that demands the end of the United States blockade against the largest of the Antilles.

The result confirms the isolation of the northern nation in its policy against Havana, described by the international community as obsolete and meaningless.

Beijing's permanent representative to the UN, Fu Cong, demanded the end of the blockade and the repeal of unilateral sanctions against the island and called for Cuba to be removed from the list of countries supposedly sponsoring terrorism. (Text and photo: PL)
