Cuba supports Human Rights Council Triennial Work Programme

Havana, 8 Jan. – Cuba’s delegation supported the adoption of the Triennial Work Programme of the Human Rights Council at the United Nations (UN), during an intervention by Ambassador Rodolfo Benítez Verson, who stressed the need to ensure clear information on the costs and resources associated with mandated activities, according to the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cubaminrex.

The diplomat stated that this information will allow Member States, together with the Office of the High Commissioner, to develop an effective and verifiable methodology for making timely decisions in the current context of financial difficulties.

He reiterated that it is always for Member States to decide on activities mandated by the Council, including those that could be affected by the liquidity crisis.

Benítez Verson emphasised that a comprehensive review should prioritise actions linked to cooperation, technical assistance and confidence-building, rather than selective mandates that are costly and ineffective in promoting human rights.

The intervention reaffirmed Cuba’s position in defence of a transparent multilateral system based on cooperation and respect for the sovereignty of States, as a way to ensure the effective protection of human rights. (Source: ACN)
