Ongoing assessments for dredging in the port of Batabanó

Havana, Nov. 12. - After taking measurements to study the current depth of the access channel of the port of Batabanó, work will be done today to develop the dredging project for the areas whose depths were modified due to the accumulation of sediments from the passage of Hurricane Rafael.

According to the Minister of Transportation, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, actions are being coordinated to transfer the necessary equipment to Batabanó to carry out the dredging.

The minister detailed on his official Facebook page that this Monday divers and specialists from the Geocuba Marine Studies Company took measurements to study the current depth of the port's access channel, after difficulties arose in the maneuver of the ferry Perseverancia (Nueva Gerona - Batabanó) on its first trip after the meteor.

For this reason, the ferry's navigation was suspended until further notice, and the execution of an exact bathymetry of the channel was announced to assess the extent of the accumulation of sediments at the bottom.

According to what was reported, the rest of the cargo vessels operating on that route have no difficulties and will continue sailing.

Rodríguez Dávila specified that the analyses corresponding to this day will be carried out through close coordination between the Marine Studies Company, the Maritime Port Group (Gemar, by its acronym in Spanish) and the Maritime Services Company (Sermar, by its acronym in Spanish), under the coordination of the Cuban Maritime Administration and the Ministry of Transport.

He added that the Gemar companies, in coordination with the Municipal Defense Council of Isla de la Juventud, guarantee that the logistics work of cargo destined for the Island, which was reopened last Saturday and has not stopped, does not stop.

The Perseverancia ferry, equipped to board 430 passengers and rolling cargo such as vehicles, is the main vessel for the transportation of goods and the population between the large island of the Cuban archipelago and the special municipality Isla de la Juventud. (Text and Photo: ACN)
