Gaza on the brink of famine, UN warns

Ramallah, Dec 30.- The Gaza Strip is close to entering a stage of famine today due to the aggression and blockade imposed by Israel for more than 14 months, the UN warned.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) warned on its account on X about the growing food insecurity and lack of humanitarian aid to the Gazan population.

In this situation, he urged greater international cooperation and advocated for an immediate ceasefire with the aim of providing vital aid in the face of the approaching famine.

In this regard, UNRWA stressed that the situation is worse in the northern region, after three months of uninterrupted ground offensive by the Israeli military, which caused thousands of deaths and injuries, in addition to serious damage to infrastructure, including hospitals.

A few days ago, the acting governor of the southern Khan Yunis governorate, Jihad Abu Halib, denounced that the blockade is starving Palestinians.

He specified that the military closes the border crossings for long periods and when they open them they limit the entry process of vital products in proportion to the needs of the population.

This strategy portends a humanitarian disaster in the coastal enclave, said the official.

We are now on the brink of a real famine as a result of the severe shortage of basic foodstuffs such as flour, oil and vegetables, as well as medical supplies, he stressed.

Earlier this month, the World Food Programme (WFP) warned that the territory is approaching collapse as famine advances due to war and growing insecurity that makes the delivery of aid impossible.

Access restrictions, the absence of order and disregard for international law affect humanitarian personnel, operations and the population of the territory, the organization stressed.

The WFP criticized the looting and attacks on humanitarian convoys in the center and south of the enclave, and clarified that it is impossible to send vital products to the north because of the operations of the Israeli army, which closed the area.

Meanwhile, the UN humanitarian coordinator for the occupied Palestinian territories, Muhannad Hadi, warned days ago about the serious security and food crisis that Gaza is suffering.

I am very concerned about the humanitarian situation and the deterioration of security there, said in a statement the deputy special coordinator for the Middle East peace process.

Civilians are paying the price of the continued exchange of fire between the parties, he said. (Text and Photo: Granma)
