Lima, Jan 31. - A multidisciplinary team from the Ministry of Culture of Peru (Mincul, for its acronym in Spanish) discovered a pyramidal building from the pre-Columbian Caral culture, considered the oldest in America, located in the north of the Lima’s department.
"The multidisciplinary team of the Caral Archaeological Zone has discovered a new pyramidal building in sector F of the Chupacigarro archaeological settlement. This discovery will contribute to the knowledge of the urban layout of Chupacigarro and will allow its enhancement as part of the tourist circuit of the Sacred City of Caral," the ministry reported in a statement on Thursday.
Chupacigarro is an archaeological settlement of the urban complex of the Caral civilization, which developed between the years 3,000 and 1,800 BC.
It is located approximately one kilometer west of the Sacred City of Caral, the oldest urban center in America and the nerve center of the Caral culture.
The Mincul reported that the team of researchers removed weeds and dead trees, “revealing stone walls with at least three superimposed platforms.”
For the experts, the pyramidal building could have played a private or religious role within the society of Caral. (Text and Photo: Cubadebate)
