China Trade Minister Concerned About US Tariffs

Beijing, Feb 19 - China's Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, today  expressed Beijing's concern about the US tariffs in a letter to the new Secretary of Commerce of that nation, Howard Lutnick.

The Asian minister stressed that economic and trade relations are a key component of ties between the two nations.

As the two largest economies in the world, bilateral cooperation in this area is vital not only for the development of both countries, but also for global economic growth," he added.

The Chinese minister stressed the willingness to work with Washington to strengthen dialogue and manage differences on the basis of respect, peaceful coexistence and mutual benefit.

Wang said that a fair and predictable political environment must be created to facilitate practical collaboration between the business communities of both countries.

Regarding the additional 10 percent tariffs imposed by the United States on Chinese products under the pretext of fentanyl-related issues, Wang expressed Beijing's strong dissatisfaction.

He recalled that both countries carried out broad and deep cooperation in drug control and achieved significant results.

According to Wang, the unilateral measures of the United States negatively affect the normal economic-trade exchange between the two nations.

China hopes to resolve the respective concerns through dialogue and consultation, the minister emphasized.

In response to Washington's tariff measures, the Asian giant implemented additional levies on products imported from the United States.

The United States Senate confirmed Howard Lutnick as Secretary of Commerce yesterday.

According to analysts, he is a multimillionaire financial executive and defender of the tariffs promoted by President Donald Trump. (Text and Photo: PL)
