Madrid, Spain, Catalan Coordinator of Solidarity Defensem Cuba, Immediate end to the illegal occupation of the Guantanamo Naval Base, United States

Demand an end to illegal occupation of Guantanamo Naval Base

Madrid, Feb 21. - The Catalan Coordinator of Solidarity Defensem Cuba, reiterated its demand for the immediate cessation of the illegal occupation of the Guantanamo Naval Base by the United States.

According to Cubainformación, on the occasion of the World Day of Action against Foreign Military Bases, the Catalan organization denounced the use of this territory as a military space and a violation of human rights.

It indicated that it constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and an attack against the sovereignty, independence and well-being of the Cuban people.

The note, which was sent to Prensa Latina by the coordinator of Cubainformación, José Manzaneda, explained that the action of Defensem Cuba takes on special relevance in view of the IX International Seminar for Peace and the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases, which will be held in May in Guantanamo, Cuba.

The US military presence in Guantanamo hinders the economic and social development of the people of Guantanamo, while ignoring the will of the Government and the people of Cuba, who have unanimously expressed their rejection of this occupation, the Catalan association stressed.

The Guantanamo Naval Base, established more than 120 years ago by an imposed treaty with no time limit on the use of Cuban territory, was the first US base on foreign soil.

It houses an illegal prison that violates humanitarian law by imprisoning and torturing prisoners without due judicial process, the publication stated.

Defensem Cuba also denounced that the US maintains more than 800 military bases in a hundred countries, of which 76 are in Latin America and the Caribbean, which represents a threat to regional sovereignty. (Text and Photo: PL)
